You know that time after a raid where you are checking everyone out to see if there are any good recruitable pawns among those left alive and downed only to find that none if them qre worth converting? Well now, instead of just leaving them to die or harvesting all their organs, for science, you can turn them into slaves and use them to help clean up after the raid or build that new huge construction project, etc. Making a slave of that cannibal raider is, understandably, pretty easy compared to converting them into a functioning memeber of soceity. Slaves are recruited significantly faster than prisoners are converted to controllable pawns.

While slaves are more likely to try and rebel than prisoners, they are also effected more by surpreession mechanics as well meaning they can actually become much easier to kept under control with liberal use of the whip (or by making each one if them sleep in a room full of caged corpses as a warning :D). They aren't just workers, but also a form of currency. Slaves can be sold off once you are done with them, kept for mood buffs for your other colonists, or used in rituals to get solid benefits. Sure my slave miner might be slower than my regular miner, but I can work him till he collapses from lack of sleep without consequence.

Slaves have very low expectations (huge constsnt mood buff) and thus actually are pretty resistant to mental breaks and can be treated pretty harashly. Slave pawns are worse workers than prisoners or other pawns due to debuffs to work speed and they need to be kept surpressed to avoid rebellions or escapes but come with a few solid advantages:
